petsolutions.com has a master test kit for about 17 dollars. This includes Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates, and a couple others.
Really, when starting a tank, you need to test for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates,but when your tank is cycled, you only have to test for nitrates, because you have bacteria that eat ammonia and nitrites, meaning they should be zero. You only have to test other parameters if it looks like there is a problem.
PH and hardness get taken care of with water changes, and chlorine gets taken care of by water conditioner.
You aren’t limited to liquid tests, your LFS should have a variety of test strips. These are less accurate, but much more convenient. You could get a 6-in-1 test, with 25 strips for about 12 dollars.
The test strips will last about 6 months if you test every week, and the liquid tests will last at least a year or so.
