Railroad Track

How long is a piece of track?

There is a walking / bike path near my house used to be part of a railway. All tracks have been removed. However, I found what appears to be part of a track, unless * is embedded vertically in the ground! I tried to dig the same and I'm about 8 inches deep. If this is really a piece of rail, how long would it be? On foot? Six feet? More? Thank you.
