What are the constellations visible in May in the south half of Northern California?

Basically, it depends on the time of night that you are going to observe. Remember that constellations rise and set 2 hours earlier per month.

Also it depends on how clear your horizon is and the degree of light pollution in your area. Light pollution will render the fainter constellations indistinguishable. I live in the area so I have some idea.

In the early evening just after sunset, you can see Auriga, Gemini, Leo, Bootes, Ursa Major.

Around midnight you can see Virgo, Corona Borealis, Hercules.

After midnight: Lyra, Cygnus, Aquila, Scorpius, Ophiuchus.

Before dawn: Sagittarius, Capricornus, Cepheus.
