I need the details of a cheap radio circuit / kit that works well for children in integrated schools?

I work as a technician in a department of design and technology in a comprehensive school. We currently have a project that involves children (9 years: 13 years old) set up a radio components. The problem is that we are having a very low success rate, and those who do work have a very weak reception. Besides this, radio is Oly PM If anyone can recommend a circuit of an FM radio with good reception that would be very grateful. The radio should be finished very cheap (about $ 3.00). Housing, etc. is not a problem as the design of these children themselves.
