Difference between normal genetic variation and genetic linkage?

What is the difference between these and dihybrid inheritance monohybrid and complete / incomplete link? I know that one is a deviation from the rules, but what about them are the same or different chromosomes? Does cross linking occurs only? Cuz I thought monohybrid and dihybrids occur due to independent distribution during meiosis, but so does for the exact link as well?

If I read your last paragraph correctly, it can be confused about what is the link; crosslinking occurs between linked genes. If two genes are not related, "Crossing-over" makes no sense. Basically, the linkage reduces the variation, because it ensures that certain traits are inherited together. Instead of obtaining coefficients provided in the offspring (eg in a 1:1:1:1 dihybrid testcross) there is a unequal distribution of individual phenotypes. Fortunately, Mendel chose traits that are not linked, and showed the exact reasons he expected (within the error experimental). If the genes had been linked, there could be abandoned altogether, since the observed proportions would have been completely off.
